THE NEWQUAY & PAR AC JUNIOR SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE

Junior school cross country running has taken place at the Par Recreational Fields since 1989. It was first introduced after Newquay & Par Athletic Club president, Dave Varney approached the local Sports & Leisure Department of Restormel Borough Council with the idea to invite local schools in the Par area to take part in a monthly League competition.

At it’s height, the League expanded to over 400 young pupils taking part. It was gradually handed on firstly to Poltair School and then the Mid Cornwall Sports Network.

When the Mid Cornwall Sports Network took on the whole of the organisation it carried on at Par until the Covid pandemic hit everything. The ‘League’ was broken up into School ‘cluster’ groups & Dave was made aware that some local schools were no longer taking part & offered to start up a smaller league. This first year in 2022-23 brought in six schools at the start, Biscovey, Bodmin St Petroc’s, Gorran, Ladock, Lostwithiel & Tywardreath with St Wenn joining in 2023. The report for the first meeting also acknowledges the help of club members and the original three organisers.
